How to Choose a Kitchen Remodel Contractor in 2026

Hiring a contractor to remodel your kitchen is a big decision. You're inviting someone into your home for weeks, trusting them with a significant investment, and counting on them to deliver something you'll live with every day. Getting it right matters.

After 20+ years in the trades, here's what I'd tell a friend who was hiring a contractor for the first time.

Ask if they're licensed and insured

This is non-negotiable. In New Jersey, home improvement contractors are required to be licensed, insured, and bonded. Ask for their NJHIC number and verify it. Make sure they carry liability insurance and workers' compensation for any full time employees. If something goes wrong on an uninsured job site, you could be on the hook.

At Booth Home Impressions, we're fully licensed (NJHIC #13VH11433900), insured, and bonded. We're happy to provide documentation before you sign anything.

Ask who's actually doing the work

Some contractors sell the job and then hand it off to a rotating crew of subcontractors you've never met. That's not necessarily bad... but you should know upfront. Ask who will be on your job site day to day, and whether you'll have a consistent point of contact throughout the project.

We're a small operation by design. When you hire Booth Home Impressions, you know who's coming through your door. Jay manages every project personally from the first estimate through the final walkthrough.

Review how detailed the estimate is

A vague estimate is a red flag. You want a quote that breaks out labor and materials clearly, so you can see exactly what you're paying for. Ballpark numbers and rough estimates leave too much room for surprises later.

Our estimates take 2–3 weeks because we build them line by line. That detail is what protects you from change orders and budget creep down the road.

Ask about their communication style

One of the most common complaints homeowners have about contractors is that they go dark mid-project. No updates, no return calls, no idea when someone's showing up. It's frustrating and unfortunately common.

Ask the contractor directly: how do you communicate with clients during a project? How often will I hear from you? What's the best way to reach you if I have a question?

For us, communication is built into how we work. You'll hear from Jay regularly, not just when there's a problem.

Ask to see their work

Any contractor worth hiring should be able to show you a portfolio of completed projects. Photos are a start, but references are better. Ask if you can speak with a past client — someone who had a similar scope of project to yours.

Our project gallery at boothhomeimpressions.com shows real projects we've completed for South Jersey homeowners. We're also happy to connect you with past clients who can speak to the experience of working with us.

The bottom line

The right contractor for your kitchen remodel isn't necessarily the cheapest one or the fastest one. It's the one you trust to show up, communicate clearly, do the work right, and stand behind it when the project is done.

If you're a South Jersey homeowner thinking about a kitchen remodel and want to talk through your project, we offer free in-home estimates with no pressure and no obligation. Schedule yours here.
